Federal IRS audit representation
An audit letter can feel overwhelming. Begin with what the IRS is asking about, which tax year is involved, and when a response is due.
Read the request before gathering everything
An IRS audit examines information and records to check whether a return is correct. Selection does not automatically mean you did something wrong. The IRS initiates an audit by mail; verify unexpected communications through official channels.
Bring the complete letter and the return involved to the consultation. We can discuss the issues listed and the work needed to organize a response instead of sending an unfocused collection of documents.
Create a record that is easy to follow
- Separate records by tax year and by the issue identified in the letter.
- Match requested amounts with the documents that support them.
- Keep a copy of anything previously sent and any IRS response.
- Identify missing documents and questions before the response date.
Know who is handling the federal matter
After engagement and required authorization, William K. McNeel, EA, can represent you in the federal IRS examination within the agreed scope. The first discussion should cover the notice, deadlines, records, and your questions about the process.
We work with clients by phone or video across the United States. Representation does not guarantee that the IRS will accept every position or make no changes. If the matter also involves state correspondence, tell us so the scope and availability of assistance can be confirmed separately.
Common questions
Does an audit mean I did something wrong?
No. Selection alone does not establish that an error occurred. The examination reviews whether the return is supported and correct.
Should I send every document I have?
Start with the items and issues identified in the IRS request. We can discuss how to organize relevant supporting records and address anything missing.
Can you represent me if I live in another state?
Yes. William K. McNeel, EA, provides federal IRS representation nationwide after engagement and authorization. State-specific matters are reviewed separately.
